1. Haida Gwaii (British Columbia)
Haida Gwaii, formerly known as the Queen Charlotte Islands, is the northernmost archipelago in Canada. Due to its unique location, it is a prime location for diverse wildlife and landscapes and over 500 archaeological sites. Haida Gwaii has an interesting history. In the 1700’s, Captain George Dixon surveyed the islands and named the Queen Charlotte islands after his ship, Queen Charlotte. Only in 2010, did the British Columbia government decide to rename them Haida Gwaii, or the “island of the people” in honor of the Haida people who inhabit and have lived on these islands long before.
