Air Tanzania

Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL) is the national flag carrier of Tanzania, headquartered in Dar es Salaam. Established in 1977 following the dissolution of East African Airways, the airline is wholly owned by the Tanzanian government. It operates from its primary hub at Julius Nyerere International Airport, connecting a growing network of domestic and international destinations.

Operations and Network

As of April 2026, the airline serves 14 domestic and 16 international destinations.

  • Domestic Routes: Air Tanzania maintains a strong presence within the country, flying to cities such as Dodoma, Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar, Mwanza, and Arusha.
  • International Reach: Its regional and global network includes flights to Nairobi, Johannesburg, Mumbai, Guangzhou, and Dubai. Recent expansions include new routes to Accra, Cape Town, and Victoria Falls.

Fleet Composition

The airline has undergone a significant modernization program, growing from a single aircraft in 2016 to a fleet of 16 as of early 2026. The current fleet includes:

Long-Haul: Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners.

  • Regional and Short-Haul: Airbus A220-300, Boeing 737 Max 9, and De Havilland Dash 8-400 aircraft.
  • Cargo: One Boeing 767-300 freighter to support trade and logistics.

The government plans to continue this expansion, targeting a total of 24 aircraft by 2030. Despite its rapid growth and status as a leading carrier in Tanzania, the airline has faced financial challenges, reporting significant losses in recent fiscal years alongside calls for strategic management reforms.
