9 Best Pubs and Restaurants in Dublin, Ireland

Dublin, Ireland’s capital city, has approximately 1,000 neighborhood “watering holes!” You will find old traditional pubs with live Irish music as well as cocktail bars and superpubs. If you consider yourself a “gastro-tourist,” pubs also have some of the best meals in the city to go along with your pint of Guinness.

The following are just a few of the most highly recommended places to eat and drink in Dublin, Ireland.

1. The Stag’s Head

Located in the center of the city, The Stag’s Head is one of the oldest bars in town. Built in 1770, visiting this pub is like being in a time machine. Completely decorated in the Victorian style, the main features are the big stag’s head in the bar and a stuffed fox on the ground floor. In 2016, it was awarded the best pub in Ireland by National Hospitality and as Ireland’s best traditional pub by Sky Bar Awards.

2. O’Neill’s Pub & Kitchen

This welcoming pub is right in the middle of the city. It has been there for more than 300 years and is the site where Viking leaders held councils of law. It is also considered to be the champion of traditional Irish pub food — from a full Irish breakfast to a dinner of oysters on the half shell with red wine and a shallot vinaigrette.

3. The Landmark

Applauded as an amazing pub with fantastic food, lager, and brilliant service, The Landmark features Irish Stew in a bread bowl, cottage pie, and other unique plates. It’s the perfect stop for both food and drinks!

4. L. Mulligan. Grocer

In Stoneybatter, this beautifully preserved former grocery shop, L. Mulligan. Grocer, uses the best Irish ingredients in its creative presentations. There is also an incredible variety of ciders and craft beers. One of their specialties is a chocolate and Earl Grey mousse in a teacup with cornflower shortbread and poached pear.

5. Peruke & Periwig

An elegant pub just a short walk from St Stephen’s Green park, Peruke & Periwig’s vintage beauty has an old-world charm with portraits, a library wall holding well-worn volumes, and a cozy atmosphere. However, the food menu is thoroughly modern and is made with premium Irish ingredients. The small bites are also delicious and are designed to accompany their luxurious and pretty cocktails.

6. The Brazen Head

The Brazen Head is officially Ireland’s oldest pub and dates back to 1198! The exterior has exposed stonework and colorful flowers tumbling from large hanging baskets. There are bowls of delicious seafood chowder and Guinness stew along with live, traditional music every night. Their regular Irish storytelling evenings were voted TripAdvisor’s top choice for shows and concerts in the city in 2015 and 2016.

7. Devitt’s Pub

The specialty at Devitt’s is a delicious Sunday roast beef dinner. It boasts of great 80s music and great attention to detail. One customer told of wanting to have an Irish whiskey and the waiter brought an armful of bottles to sniff until he found one he liked! The owner’s private whiskey cabinets in a back room are said to be legendary.

8. JP Mooneys

Experience a wonderful old pub serving traditional Irish food such as a tasty lamb stew or prawn with a smoked salmon salad or even the best beef burger in Dublin. The produce is specifically sourced for the pub, which maintains the quality of the ingredients. Have a few Guinnesses while you listen to a talented local musician.

9. Lemon & Duke

If you are an American and a bit homesick, you can go to Lemon & Duke for a glimpse of New York City right in the heart of Dublin and get beef brisket or weekend brunch in a spacious and bright atmosphere. Or perhaps you would rather wait until it evolves into a late-night venue, which is ideal for dinner followed by dancing and drinks. This was the winner of the 2018 Irish Bar Food of the Year Award.

Enjoy your search for the best places to eat in Dublin Ireland. Combine the local cuisine with the best of Irish beer/Guinness and cocktails, and you will eventually choose your favorite pubs where you can also find music, entertainment, and a good time.
