ITA Airways
ITA Airways (Italia Trasporto Aereo S.p.A.) is the national flag carrier of Italy, founded in 2020 as the successor to the bankrupt Alitalia. The airline officially commenced operations on October 15, 2021, and is headquartered in Rome.
Ownership and Operations
- Ownership: The airline is co owned by the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance (59%) and the Lufthansa Group (41%). Lufthansa plans to potentially acquire 100% of the airline by 2029.
- Hubs: Its primary operational hub is Rome Fiumicino Airport, with Milan Linate Airport serving as a secondary focus city.
- Fleet: ITA operates an all Airbus fleet of approximately 100 aircraft, including next generation models like the A350-900 and A330-900neo for long haul routes.
- Destinations: As of early 2026, the airline serves over 70 destinations across Italy, Europe, North and South America, Africa, and Asia.
Service and Branding
- Travel Classes: The airline offers multiple service tiers, including Economy, Premium Economy, and Business Class. Long haul business class often features lie flat beds and gourmet Italian cuisine.
- Alliance Status: ITA Airways was previously a member of the SkyTeam alliance but officially exited on April 30, 2025. It is currently in an integration phase to join the Star Alliance by the first half of 2026.
- Visual Identity: Its aircraft are recognizable by a distinct blue livery with the Italian tricolor on the tail. The airline also succeeded Alitalia as the official carrier for the Pope.
