Korean Air

Korean Air (Korean Air Lines Co., Ltd.) is the largest airline and the national flag carrier of South Korea. Founded in 1969 after the Hanjin Group acquired the state owned Korean Air Lines, it is headquartered in Seoul with its primary international hub at Incheon International Airport (ICN) Terminal 2.

Ownership and Strategic Growth
  • Parent Company: It is owned by the Hanjin Group and majority controlled by Hanjin KAL Corporation.
  • Asiana Merger: Following a multi year process, Korean Air finalized the acquisition of its domestic rival, Asiana Airlines, in December 2024. The two brands are currently operating independently as subsidiaries, with a full integration under the Korean Air brand expected by late 2026.
  • Subsidiaries: The airline operates a low cost carrier, Jin Air, which is planned to merge with Asiana’s budget units (Air Busan and Air Seoul) to create a single large LCC.

Fleet and Operations
  • Fleet: The airline maintains a diverse fleet of over 160 aircraft, including iconic “jumbo” jets like the Boeing 747-8 and the Airbus A380, as well as next generation Boeing 787 Dreamliners and Airbus A350s.
  • Global Network: It serves 126 international cities across 44 countries, including major U.S. gateways like Los Angeles, New York JFK, and Atlanta.
  • Cargo Leadership: Korean Air Cargo is consistently ranked among the top international cargo airlines globally.

Alliances and Services
  • SkyTeam Alliance: Korean Air is a founding member of the SkyTeam alliance and maintains a major trans-Pacific joint venture with Delta Air Lines.
  • Service Standards: It is one of a select group of airlines certified as a 5-Star Airline by Skytrax, recognized for high quality service across its First Class, Prestige (Business), and Economy cabins.
  • Loyalty Program: Its frequent flyer program, SKYPASS, allows members to earn and redeem miles across the SkyTeam network.

Visual Identity
  • 2025 Rebrand: In March 2025, the airline introduced its first major rebrand in over 40 years, featuring a modernized, monochromatic version of the Taegeuk symbol found on the Korean national flag.
