Lufthansa

Lufthansa (Deutsche Lufthansa AG) is the national flag carrier of Germany and one of the largest airline groups in the world. Founded in 1953 as the successor to the original Deutsche Luft Hansa (1926–1945), it is headquartered in Cologne with its primary operational hubs at Frankfurt Airport (FRA) and Munich Airport (MUC).

Ownership and Group Structure
  • The Lufthansa Group: The airline is the core brand of a vast aviation group that includes other major European carriers such as Swiss International Air LinesAustrian AirlinesBrussels AirlinesITA Airways, and the low cost subsidiary Eurowings.
  • Privatization Status: Originally state owned, the company was fully privatized in 1997. Following a temporary government bailout during the COVID-19 pandemic, the German state fully divested its stake by late 2022, returning the company to private ownership.

  • Network Expansion: For the summer 2026 season, the group plans to operate over 14,000 weekly connections to 330 destinations. New routes include direct flights from Frankfurt to St. LouisRio de Janeiro, and Cape Town.

  • Future Onboard Experience (FOX): Launching in spring 2026, this initiative focuses on digital personalization and flexible dining across all long haul classes.
