Qantas
Qantas Airways is the flag carrier of Australia and the second oldest continuously operating airline in the world. Founded in 1920 as Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services Limited, the airline is widely known by its nickname, the Flying Kangaroo, and its official slogan, the Spirit of Australia.
Current Operations and Global Reach
As of 2026, Qantas remains the largest domestic and international airline in Australia, operating from its main hub at Sydney Airport.
- Network. The airline connects Australia to all seven continents, with key international hubs in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth.
- Alliances. Qantas is a founding member of the oneworld alliance, maintaining extensive partnerships with carriers like American Airlines and British Airways.
- Subsidiaries. The Qantas Group includes the low cost carrier Jetstar and regional services under the QantasLink banner.
Project Sunrise and Future Fleet
Qantas is currently undergoing a major fleet renewal program focused on ultra long haul travel and sustainability.
- Project Sunrise. This initiative aims to launch the world’s longest nonstop commercial flights, connecting Sydney to London and New York.
- A350-1000ULR. The first of 12 specially configured Airbus A350 aircraft is scheduled for delivery in late 2026. These jets will feature a reduced capacity of 238 seats to maximize passenger comfort on flights lasting up to 22 hours.
- Wellness Features. To combat fatigue on these long journeys, the new aircraft will include a dedicated Wellbeing Zone for stretching and hydration, along with advanced circadian lighting.
Historical Significance
Qantas has a long history of pioneering aviation milestones.
- Early Years. It began in the Queensland outback, initially operating mail services and medical flights for what became the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
- Technological Milestones. In 1959, Qantas was the first airline outside the United States to operate Boeing 707 jets.
- Cabin Innovation. The airline is credited with inventing Business Class, which it introduced to the industry in 1979.
