South African Airways

South African Airways (SAA) is the state owned flag carrier of South Africa and has been a cornerstone of African aviation since its founding in 1934. Based at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, the airline has spent the last several years rebuilding its network following a significant restructuring process.
  • Network and 2026 Expansion: As of early 2026, SAA operates a focused network of domestic, regional, and select intercontinental routes. Key international destinations include São Paulo and Perth, while its regional reach includes cities like Accra, Lagos, and Mauritius. The airline is currently working to restore traditional long haul markets in Europe and North America as additional aircraft become available.
  • Fleet and Capacity: The carrier operates an all Airbus fleet composed of A320, A330, and A340 models. Throughout 2026, the airline is expected to receive several additional leased aircraft, including three jets originally scheduled for 2025 that were delayed by their lessors. To manage peak demand, SAA utilizes seasonal wet lease partnerships with carriers like SunExpress and Hi Fly.
  • Ownership Status: Following the collapse of a proposed privatization deal in 2024, South African Airways has reverted to 100% government ownership. The South African government continues to support the airline as it works toward a long term fleet renewal plan and the appointment of permanent leadership.
  • Service and Alliances: SAA remains a member of the Star Alliance, providing passengers with global connectivity through partners like United Airlines and Lufthansa. It is certified as a 4-Star Airline by Skytrax and was ranked the fourth best carrier in Africa for 2025.
  • Strategic Partnerships: In January 2026, SAA launched a major domestic codeshare agreement with CemAir, significantly expanding its reach to smaller South African cities not previously served by its own aircraft.
