Virgin Australia is one of the two major airlines in Australia and serves as the country’s largest domestic carrier by market share. Operating primarily from its hubs in Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney, the airline has transitioned into a “hybrid” carrier model that combines value pricing with premium services like Business Class and airport lounges.
- Ownership and Listing: Following its 2020 restructuring, the airline is majority-owned by the private equity firm Bain Capital. In late 2024, Qatar Airways announced plans to acquire a 25 percent minority stake, further strengthening their global partnership.
- Fleet Modernization: The airline operates an extensive fleet of over 100 aircraft, primarily Boeing 737-800 and 737 MAX 8 jets. Throughout fiscal year 2026, it is taking delivery of 13 new 737-8s to replace older models and has introduced Embraer E190-E2 regional jets to its Western Australia operations.
- Network Expansion: Virgin Australia is significantly growing its short-haul international presence. In June 2026, it will launch its first-ever international service from the nation’s capital, Canberra to Bali, operating three times per week.
- Safety and Service: The carrier is consistently ranked among the world’s safest, placing ninth globally in the 2026 AirlineRatings.com safety index. It also holds a 4-Star Airline rating from Skytrax and was named Best Regional Airline in the Australia/Pacific region for 2025.
- Innovation: The airline has introduced unique customer initiatives, such as its pets on planes trial, allowing small dogs and cats to travel in the cabin on selected domestic routes. It also recently upgraded its Priority Screening lanes in major airports to improve the experience for Business Class and Velocity Frequent Flyer elites.
