Are you struggling to find free things to do abroad? Iconic bookstores or libraries, churches, and small museums are always a low-cost option. Or if you’re looking to save on food, pick up some bread, meat, and cheese from the local supermarket and enjoy an al-fresco lunch near one of your destination’s top natural wonders.

While it’s hard to find low-cost landmarks and free things to do abroad, if you get creative, these might just be one of the best memories you’ll make.

Denmark

Assistens Cemetary

If you’re the historian of your group, you might enjoy visiting the Assistens Cemetary in Copenhagen is the final resting place of some of Denmark’s most notable historical figures. Here you can visit the graves of Hans Christian Andersen, Søren Kierkegaard, and Niels Bohr.

Jægersborg Dyrehave

Just over 4 square miles, this forested park is home to a large population of free-roaming deer. Though it is beautiful in all seasons, the park is particularly stunning during the fall months. If you’re ready for a break from the city, Jægersborg Dyrehave is just a quick trip north of Copenhagen. Enjoy the park on foot, by bike, or by horse.

Parc de La Villette Film Festival

Throughout the months of July and August, film-lovers gather on the lush lawns of Parc de La Villette for the Cinéma En Plein Air (or the Open Air Cinema). The screenings are completely free to the public. Be sure to bring a blanket and a picnic dinner to enjoy before the film!

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

Poland’s Tomb of the Unknown Soldier honors unknown heroes who have fallen for their country. An eternal flame burns at all times. Here you can watch the changing of the guard, which takes place on the hour every day of the year.

Climb Arthur’s Seat

Author Robert Louis Stevenson called Arthur’s Seat “a hill for magnitude, a mountain in virtue of its bold design.” You can hike this extinct volcano in about two hours roundtrip. The cost is free. The panoramic view of Edinburgh… priceless!

Spanish Museums with Free Days

You can see famous works by Goya, El Greco, Titian Picasso, and Salvador Dali for free! Here are some times you can get into some great Spanish Museums at no cost.

• Museo del Prado –  free from 6 – 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 5 – 7 p.m. on Sunday.
• The Reina Sofia – free on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 7 – 9 p.m. Free on Sundays from 1:30 – 7 p.m.
• Museo Taurino (Bullfighting Museum) – always free to the public

Sweden

Visit the Churches in Gamla Stan

There is much to see in Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s Old Town, while spending little to no money. Get your fill of incredible architecture and rich history while visiting one of the many churches. The oldest of these is Storkyrkan. This Cathedral has a nominal fee for entry, but here you will see the famous statue of St. George and the Dragon.
